BACK STORY

The Battle of Artemisium was a series of naval engagements, which took place simultaneously with the famous land battle at Thermopylae (‘Rise of Spartans’) in 480 BC. It was fought between an alliance of Greek city-states, and the Persian Empire. For three days the Greek fleet held the Persians back, but withdrew southward to Salamis when news came of the Greek defeat at Thermopylae, this retreat allowed the Persians to capture the now-evacuated Athens. However, in late 480 BC the Persians were defeated at the Battle of Salamis by the Greeks, and the following year saw the end of the Persian invasion with their defeat at the Battle of Plataea.
